The Ebor Handicap is a flat handicap horse race that makes up part of the last day of the Ebor Festival; an iconic racing festival hosted at the renowned York Racecourse in North Yorkshire, England.
As it stands, the Ebor Handicap is the most valuable flat handicap in Europe, with its burgeoning purse seeing the event attract the crème de la crème of the horse racing industry. In 2019, the Ebor Handicap became the first British handicap race to be worth £1,000,000, seeing the level of interest in the event spike dramatically.
Established in 1843, the Ebor Handicap takes place every year in August and covers a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards. This equates to 2,787 metres, making it a true test of endurance for participating horses. To enter the race, horses must be at least four years old.
The event was originally called the Great Ebor Handicap and ran over 2 miles. As the years went on the race matured to assume the form it takes today.
When talking about the history of this race, it's hard not to mention Lester Piggott; a jockey that saddled five winning horses of the Ebor Handicap. These were Gladness (1958), Primera (1959), Die Hard (1961), Tintagel II (1970), Jupiter Island (1983).
More recent winners of the event include Litigant (2015), Heartbreak City (2016), Nakeeta (2017), Muntahaa (2018), Mustajeer (2019) and Fujaira Prince (2020).
There have been several instances where the race has been unable to run; once in 2008 when it was abandoned due to a waterlogged track and again in 2020 because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The race
